Chlorastrolite Sand

Chlorastrolite, also known as greenstone, is the state gem of Michigan. It is found along the Keeweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. It forms inside basalt as an infill in voids left by gas bubbles. Most chlorastrolite found is very small, so look for it in the sand. The photographer extracted just the chlorastrolite grains from a sample of sand to produce the stunning image you see above.
