The Friends of Mineralogy; Who are we and what do we do?

Mineralogy is one of the few sciences in which the amateur can still make a significant contribution.  The Friends of Mineralogy (FM) is an organization that was started to bridge the gap between the amateur collector and professional mineralogist.  We are affiliated with the Mineralogical Record and the American Geological Institute.  FM encourages education through awards for best articles in Rocks and Mineral magazine and the Mineralogical Record.  Several state mineral location indices have been prepared by FM chapters or individual members.  Mineral locality indexes prepared by FM members appear frequently in Rocks and Minerals magazine.  Educational symposia and field trips are held both nationally and regionally.  Each year FM sponsors a symposium at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society show.  Also at the Tucson Show, we honor the best educational display cases for both individual and institution.

The South has a long mining tradition, involving ores such as gold, mica, iron, granite and marble. This year's topic will cover historic and current mining activities in the region.

Tentatively, in addition to the topics listed below, we will have a presentation by Carl Snelling of the Pacific Northwest Chapter on the subject of “Managing Your Mineral Collection”.  A lot of work by Carl and his team has gone into the development of an inclusive management model.  Carl will be presenting the model to us for our benefit and to solicit feedback for any improvement opportunities we might come up with.

Confirmed speakers
Stan Bearden - Cartersville Mining District
Travis Paris - Gold Mining in the Southeast
Tom Batcha - Iron Mining and the Furnaces of the South
Bumpi Barwood - Indian Mountain
