The AFMS Scholarship Foundation, authorized in the By-Laws of the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies, was incorporated as a Minnesota Corporation on March 19, 1964. More detailed information – especially Fund history – is available on the AFMS website (www.amfed.org) under “The AFMS”, then “Scholarship Foundation”.
PURPOSE: The Foundation’s goal is to accumulate and manage a Fund, whose income is used to finance Scholarships. The principal cannot be used for any other purpose; in theory the Fund is perpetual. (see **below)
THE FUND: As of August 1, 2014, the market value of the total Fund was just over $1,251,700.00. With the exception of a few hundred dollars from outside organizations, Earth Science Clubs and Societies and their members across the country, have donated the entire amount. As of June 30, 2014, MWF had contributed $213,856.65. At that time, MWF was the second largest donor to the AFMS Scholarship Foundation. ** It should be noted that a specified ratio of donations to grants must be maintained to avoid excise taxes, which would diminish assets. (Each year the total donations from all Regions, must equal 1/3 of grants.)
GIFTS: Donations should be sent to MWF Scholarship Committee Chair*. The MWF Chairman sees that the donor receives proper credit, and forwards the gifts to the Foundation Treasurer. (Each Region’s donations are recorded separately by the Fund Treasurer.) All gifts are added the AFMS Scholarship Foundation "trust" account unless otherwise specified and are tax-deductible to the donor. *(Marge Collins, 3017 Niles-Buchanan Rd., Buchanan MI 49107 269-695-4313 firstname.lastname@example.org)
RECOGNITION OF DONORS: All donors receive a letter acknowledging their contribution. For Club donations their Level of Participation* (recorded as a %) is updated and information about the current Recipients and Honoree is reported, if possible. The Level of Participation is recorded and publicized. * Club Participation is calculated as a %. Contributions of $1.00 per current member equal 100%. Thus $5.00 cumulative donations per current member, equals 5,000%. In 2014, each Club’s total donations from the beginning of their participation was reconstructed using data in old Directories. Certificates crediting cumulative donations are now presented at the Convention in $1,000.00 increments. For individuals, firms, and non-member organizations, a "Founders Certificate" in recognition of $500 cumulative donations is presented unless the donor(s) request credit be assigned to a club of their choice.
MEMORIALS & LIVING MEMORIALS: Club members can be Honored and deceased members Memorialized and upon request, a note is sent to the “next of kin”. Those honored are included in Committee Reports published through normal channels, and in the current MWF Directory.
HONORARY AWARDS: Every year since 1972, each of the six participating Federations, have chosen an Honorary Award Winner, (an individual or couple, nominated by a Club in recognition of their “service above and beyond”). It is the “Honoree(s)” who selects the school and in full cooperation with that institution; chooses two students to receive the scholarship grants. See “How to Suggest a Candidate …” below.
GRANTS TO STUDENTS: Grants made by the Foundation are restricted to graduate students who are U.S. citizens, majoring in one of the earth sciences, since our joint interest lies in this field. (A student working for an advanced degree is presumed to have definitely decided to follow that field for his lifetime vocation, insofar as such a decision is possible.) Currently the Fund provides two one-year scholarship grants of $4,000.00 each year for the six participating Regional Federations. Over the years, 579 students across the country have received Scholarships from the Foundation since the first grant of $300.00 was awarded in 1965. As of summer of 2014, the total of grants paid by the Fund is $1,634,050.00, to students from 131 Universities and Colleges.
HOW TO SUGGEST A CANDIDATE FOR A SCHOLARSHIP HONORARY AWARD The candidate may be someone (or a couple) that you wish to honor in your own club another club, or an individual in the professional world, such as a professor at a university or college. The more information you can supply, the better. Often you can get much of the needed information from the candidate. Try to include service to rock clubs, students and the community, accomplishments and/or contributions made to earth sciences (geology, mineralogy, paleontology, archaeology, oceanography, etc., whichever may be his/her specialty), universities or colleges attended, degrees received, papers, pamphlets or books written alone or in conjunction with someone else. List honorary and professional organizations, present or past positions held, and honors which have been received, Include personal information such as date and place of birth, marital status, number of children, home address, etc. If possible, include a black and white wallet size photo of the candidate. The Board of Selectors must rely on the information you send, so include everything you can to support your nominee. Send your nomination to the MWF Board of Selectors c/o : Tom Whitlatch, 1147 Staub Ct., NE Cedar Rapids IA 52402 319-551-3870 email@example.com
