Setting up a booth at the Springfield Culture Fest, the club passes out
geology information for teachers to use with their students, club brochures,
and data cards with attached specimens.
Popular with both adults and children, the specimens include Ohio flint,
obsidian, quartz crystals, and fossils. There is a “Spin and Win”

ANNUAL GEOLOGY ARTS FAIR.
Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center (located inside Waterloo State recreation
Area), 10730 Bush Road. Sat. 10:00-5:00, Sun. 10:00-4:00. This
fair is presented jointly by the Midwest
Mineralogical and Lapidary Society of Michigan,
the Kalamazoo Geological and Mineral Society,
and the Huron Hills Lapidary and Mineral
Society.
12 vendors will be
selling fossils, minerals, jewelry, and lapidary equipment.
Demonstrations will
include sphere making and bead making, and there will be an
exhibit of spheres,
all of which are made from Michigan material.
Special Event: during
the show, Park Rangers will regularly conduct geology hikes through the
park’s bog areas. When needed, these hikes will be geared for handicap
access. For kids,
Park Rangers will show kids how to make trilobite casts and conduct a
workshop on polishing Petoskey Stones - which the kids get to keep!.
There will also be programs, a swap and sell, and food.

fossil-bearing Silurian Waldron Shale and

and trilobites. A mineral collecting
pile from Hastie's mill dump in Rosiclare,
Illinois, will also be available.

of Coal;” Dan Phelps, “Fossils

Charles Oldham “Minerals in the Ohio Valley;”

Montebello Access Area, right on the Mississippi River, immediately north of
the west end of the US 136 bridge that connects Hamilton, IL with Keokuk,

There will be a swap area, displays of geodes, geode cracking and
Identification; geode contests with awards,
even souvenir T-shirts! THE MAIN
ATTRACTION—guided geode collecting trips!!
You will be guided to and from excellent geode collecting areas. Some
sites are normally fee areas, others are on private land that is accessible
only as part of the Fest! The guides will stay at the site to answer
questions and help with identification. Each hunt lasts about five
hours. PLEASE NOTE: You MUST register AND sign the waiver to
participate in the hunts (geode collecting trips). The Registration
Fee is $20.00 for individuals, $30.00 for a family. This entitles the
registrant to as many as five (5) hunts
- two on Friday, two in Saturday, and one on Sunday. REGISTRATION
CLOSES after the first 500 registrants have PAID. This is an
extremely popular event,
so register soon. Those expecting to register on the day of the show
will almost certainly be disappointed!
