Local Club or Society Information:

I am a member of the following:

bulletVentura Gem & Mineral Society (the club I'm currently most active with; we moved from Monterey to Ventura in 1998)
bulletCarmel Valley Gem & Mineral Society (President, 1994-1998; previously served as Show Chair and as Vice President)
bulletFossils for Fun Society
bulletMid-America Paleontology Society
bulletMonterey Bay Paleontological Society

Rockhounding Interests:

My rockhounding interests are varied.  Primarily, I'm a fossil collector (fossils of all sorts, but especially fossil fish and shark teeth, insects, echinoderms, plants, and microfossils), and I focus mostly on self-collected fossils.  I like field collecting and reading about the history of paleontology and have published articles on classic fossil-collecting sites in the CFMS Newsletter, Rock & Gem magazine, and the annual Expo Digest of the Mid-America Paleontology Society.  In addition to fossils themselves, I collect books on fossils and paleontology.  I also engage in limited mineral collecting and have increasingly focused on thumb-nail minerals (the older I get, the more I look for ways to save space!).  I'm just beginning to make baby steps into lapidary arts with tumbling and cabbing of materials I've collected on the beaches and in the deserts of California (mostly agate, jasper, and jade).

Personal Information:

I'm married to Nancy Brace-Thompson, and we have two kids, Hannah and Alex.  I work for Sage Publications, Inc., in Thousand Oaks, California, as an acquisitions editor of scholarly books, reference works, and textbooks in the fields of psychology, family studies, and gerontology. Previously, I worked for 14 years in marketing and editorial with Brooks/Cole Publishing Company in Pacific Grove, California.  My job takes me around the country to attend academic conventions and to talk with prospective authors at colleges and universities.  Whenever one of these trips includes a Saturday night stay-over, I always try to squeeze in some fossil collecting, and thus my collection includes self-collected specimens from most states in the U.S.  I've lived in the following states and thus have a fair number of fossils from each:  Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Maine, and California.  After taking a few geology courses at the University of Maryland in 1976, I earned a B.A. in English and German from Johns Hopkins University in 1980 and a Master's degree in English from the University of Massachusetts in 1984 before starting a career in publishing.
